Women & land ownership

RESEARCH TITLE: WOMEN & LAND OWNERSHIP

AREA OF STUDY: UBUNGO-KIBANGU & BUZA, DAR ES SALAAM

A: CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED DURING DATA COLLECTION.

  • Insufficient budget; A sufficient budget was needed to be able to successfully implement this research with a positive aim for women on land ownership in the country.  Money was needed in order to enable researchers to travel from the office to the research areas by street mini-buses and bajaji. Money was also needed to facilitate food for the researchers and to support the businesses conducted by the respondents by buying their small products such as bananas, water, peanuts, etc. in order to attract their response to our research, as many of them said "an empty hand does not count".

  • Recommendation: For all future researches, we recommend the allocation of sufficient budget

  • Unfriendly time for research performance; this has affected our research in two areas because we conducted our research on a weekday and also in the afternoon where a group of office people were missing from our response because most of them were at their offices.  Second, the time of the research was accompanied by very hot sun, thus leading to working in a very challenging environment and finally the researchers became very tired.

  • Recommendation: We suggest that, the future researches should be conducted even on Saturdays so as to get the idea contributions from the group of office workers, or electronic surveys should be conducted by distributing questionnaires to various WhatsApp groups and others.  Finally, we suggest that the research should be done at peak hours (4PM-6PM o'clock) to avoid direct effect of sun lights for researchers.

  • Lack of research equipment; our research focused on text, audio and video/image feedback capture.  In our case, taking information through writing is more successful than other methods of taking information, this is hampered by the lack of a modernized phone for taking pictures and audio.  For example, one of the researcher's phones turned off before reaching the research area due to the low quality of the phone's battery.

Likewise, the lack of sound recording equipment in the studies has affected the quality of information collection because the information collection area was affected by the roar of motorcars and motorcycles.

  • Recommendation: We suggest that for future studies, a combination between those with better quality phones and those with medium/low capacity should be considered to bring a balanced work.  Likewise, we recommend the presence of quality audio recorders to make the work more effective and interesting for the users of the research work.

  • The narrow response of research participants on the issue of video and images; Most of the researchers are surrounded by the belief that all researchers have the goal of making money through relevant research.  This has led many of them to refuse to take photo and video evidence.  Likewise, the video recording was stopped because most of the research participants were embarrassed due to the state of their clothing because most of them were in their daily errands.

  • Recommendation: Open education is needed for research participants on the importance of their participation in research.  Not every survey aims to make money through photography.  Similarly, we should assure the research participants about the confidentiality of their responses as much as they like.

  • Lack of sufficient information; in obtaining information, there were some citizens in the area of study who gave us incomplete information and others refuse completely. This is due to a lack of self-confidence, freedom of expression from the people.

  • Sexual harassment: Many if not some of the respondents needed phone numbers from female researches for the sake of love after sharing their opinions. This reduced the morale of working.

  • Recommendation: Discriminatory education should be given to research participants and community members in general on their attitudes regarding the role of women in society.  Most of them consider a woman as a tool to comfort their hearts sexually, and so on.

B: BENEFITS OF OUR RESEARCH

  •  In general, our research on "Women & Land ownership has brought various benefits, such as;

  •  It has helped us to distribute and advertise our core company "COBRYSON INVESTMENT LIMITED" in the heads of many people through our research.  It is our hope, we will receive many calls from research participants and others who need to buy land resources from us.

  •  It has given us insight into the perception of women in owning land resources in the country.  Many have opened up well about their perception on land ownership in Tanzania.

  •  It has helped us to know that many women of the current generation realize the importance of land for current and future benefits.

C: SHOULD IT BE REPEATED OR NOT??

  • In general, we do not recommend re-doing the research for the following reasons:

  • We believe that the research done is self-sufficient if we include the research done electronically.

  • In order to save costs, we suggest to focus more on electronic research.

  • On the other hand, we do not prevent the replication of studies. It can be repeated if the identified challenges are resolved.
